STUDIO DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

Orchard Rise is a stand-alone facility with a floor area of 80m2, incorporating 2 generous isolation booths, control room, rehearsal space, storage facilities and outdoor workspace.

The design was developed by Orchard Rise following a period of research on the web and in consultation with various materials suppliers and specialist contractors.

The overall look is one characteristic of the typical sheep shearing sheds in the surrounding district, and the choice of corrugated sheet cladding and recycled timbers enhances this.

Walls have been built using a double-stud approach with thorough insulation and gap sealing, providing better reduction in sound transfer between adjacent spaces. Whilst not "sound proof", the reduction in sound level between spaces provides good isolation, enabling simultaneous recording of several sources in the different rooms with minimal "bleed" between them.

Windows on the front wall are of 6mm laminated glass, which was found to have better sound reduction characteristics than double glazing for the equivalent cost. Building to a budget means compromise, but the outcome from using this thickness glass is quite satisfactory, espeically given the quiet rural setting.

The main internal room is designed to work equally well as a routine mixing space and a rehearsal and jamming space for groups of 6-8 people. Heavy curtains across the front windows will enable the acoustics to be changed from somewhat live to relatively flat to help out with the dual purpose of the room. This main room also enables a full drum kit to be played live while musicians and vocalists working in the two booths remain isolated. This helps capture that live energy that comes from working directly with each other on a take, rather than always relying on overdubs.
